Rio Futaleufu

Known primarily as a whitewater river the Futaleaufu should be approached with caution by anyone looking to float the river.  With numerous Class V and even a Class VI rapid it would be best to attempt through one of the local rafting companies.

The river does have two sections that may be floated and fished.  The El Limite section from the Argentine border to the beginning of the rapid section near the town of Futaleufu is the most popular float among local fishing lodges for its predicable trout.  In this big powerful river the fish find the calm water under overhanging tree branches making it easy to find fish.

The other float begins below the last rapids on the river the McCall section.  A long float that leads into Lago  Yelcho there seem to be higher numbers of trout on this scenic float surrounded by snow capped Andean Peaks.  The best fishing however, is in Lago Yelcho at the end of the float where big browns cruise the shallows at the east end of the lake.
